Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, the Sant Joan de Déu Foundation, and IQS-URL have formalized a strategic agreement to create the IQS – Sant Joan de Déu Joint Lab, an innovative initiative that brings together the scientific, technological, and clinical strengths of both institutions with the aim of driving biomedical research applied to maternal, foetal, and paediatric health.
Sant Joan de Déu and IQS-URL launch a pioneering Joint Lab in 3D bioprinting for paediatric biomedical research

Although the Joint Lab is only now being formally established, collaboration between the two institutions goes back a long way and has enabled them to tackle numerous research challenges together. This new project seeks to create a stable, cross-cutting alliance focused on generating clinical and social impact by integrating teams, infrastructures, and expertise in areas such as 3D bioprinting, advanced materials, and computational modelling. This synergy will accelerate the transition from research to clinical practice through developing new technologies that improve the treatment of paediatric conditions and shorten the time to go from an idea to patients.
3D bioprinting
3D bioprinting is a technology that makes it possible to create three-dimensional structures of living tissues capable of mimicking the form, function, and microenvironment of real human tissues. It is used in biomedical research to develop models that make it possible to understand diseases and test new treatments without the need for direct experimentation on patients.
Training, mobility, and research
The Joint Lab also focuses on training a new generation of hybrid professionals, with both clinical insight and technological expertise, and will promote mobility for students and researchers between the two institutions. In addition, the project envisions active participation in international funding calls and the creation of strategic alliances that expand the unit’s scientific and social impact.
With this agreement, Sant Joan de Déu and IQS-URL are strengthening their commitment to translational research, innovation, and improving paediatric care, positioning the Joint Lab as a global reference centre in paediatric biomedical research.
