IQS welcomes a representative from the José Simeón Cañas Central American University to strengthen ties and promote new lines of cooperation

Institutional 19 November 2025

IQS welcomed a visit this week from a representative of the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA) in El Salvador, in connection with the defence Dr Frida Monzón’s doctoral thesis and with the aim of strengthening and expanding collaboration between the two institutions.

This gathering forms part of the Global Justice Cooperation Programme, a strategic line integrated within the Socially Responsibility University programme at IQS. This programme seeks to consolidate the historical connection that IQS has maintained for years with the UCA (El Salvador) and with Rafael Landívar University (URL) in Guatemala, and to broaden it in a multidisciplinary manner across both IQS faculties. The objective is to promote quality education committed to the common good and comprehensive human development.

Since the visit made by an IQS delegation to Central America last July, ongoing work has been conducted on the planning and launch of various lines of cooperation. The presence in Barcelona of the UCA’s Academic Vice-Rector, Dr M.ª Dolores Rovira, has enabled progress in these initiatives and direct discussions with academic and technical leaders at the two IQS schools, the School of Management and the School of Engineering.

Throughout her stay, meetings were held with the heads of the Neuromarketing Laboratory and the Finance Laboratory, as well as with heads of departments and the coordinators of various bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes. The Salvadoran delegation also visited the CTPTI Transfer Centre Laboratories, in concrete the Chemical Engineering Laboratory and the Biotechnology Pilot Plant, as well as the Analytical and Applied Chemistry Laboratories within the School of Engineering, to explore possible synergies in teaching and research.

Another highlight of the visit was the presentation of the STEM4her project, launched this month at IQS and aimed at strengthening female careers in STEM fields. Given that the UCA is also working to reduce the gender gap in these areas, the door has been opened to implementing the project in the future in the Central American country.

Following these meetings, direct connections will be established between teams from the two universities to work on a shared agenda in both the academic and research spheres.

In parallel, community engagement experience exchanges have begun with the aim of incorporating Cooperation, Service-Learning, and Volunteering initiatives into the joint work, key areas in the social orientation of both institutions.

IQS and the UCA share a mission focused on building a society based on social justice, human development, the rule of law, and environmental sustainability through teaching, research, and social outreach performed with excellence and a humanistic vision. This shared commitment forms the basis for the joint work that both institutions intend to continue fostering in the future.
