Within the framework of Science Week, IQS offered a series of in-person lectures aimed at the general public, especially at high school students, with the aim of promoting interest in science and knowledge.
IQS has played a leading role once again in the Science Week events held in Catalonia, in its 27th edition this year, which took place from 11 to 20 November. Within the framework of Science Week, IQS offered a series of in-person lectures aimed at the general public, especially at high school students, with the aim of promoting interest in science and knowledge.
On 15, 16, and 17 November, the IQS campus hosted the following activities: How a drug is designed: the role of computers in Medical Chemistry, a lecture and demonstration by Dr Roger Estrada, professor with the Department of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Cooler than ice: demonstrations with liquid nitrogen, a show and demonstration by Dr Carlos Colominas, tenured professor with the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science; and Designing new vaccines: how did nanomedicine save us from COVID-19?, a lecture and demonstration by Dr Cristina Fornaguera, researcher with the Materials Engineering Group (GEMAT) in the IQS Department of Bioengineering. Participants were required to sign up in advance either individually or through their schools.
The students and teachers who participated in the IQS events came from public and subsidized schools throughout Catalonia. Specifically, secondary school baccalaureate students from the following schools in Barcelona attended the sessions: Canigó, Claret, Horitzó, IES Broggi, IES Francisco de Goya, IES Juan de Austria, IES L’Alzina, IES Numancia, Sant Gervasi, Jesuïtes de Casp, Jesuïtes de Gràcia, Jesús-Maria, La Salle Bonanova, Maristes Sants-Las Corts, Montserrat, Padre Damián Sagrados Corazones, Pérez Iborra, Pia Sarriá, Providencia del Corazón Jesús, Real Monastir Santa Isabel, Sagrado Corazón – Corazonistas, Sagrat Cor Sarrià, Santísima Trinidad, SIL, and Súnion; and students from the following schools elsewhere in Catalonia attended: Camp Joliu (L'Arboç), European International School (Sant Cugat del Vallès), IES Gabriel Ferrater (Reus), Garbí Pere Vergés (Esplugues de Llobregat), Goar (Viladecans), La Vall (Bellaterra), Pineda (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat), Sant Gervasi (Mollet del Vallès), and Viaró (Sant Cugat del Vallès).
Science Week is coordinated by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation and is supported by the Government of Catalonia's Department of Economy and Knowledge and featured collaboration from more than a hundred institutions and entities that make up the Catalan Research and Innovation System, which includes Ramon Llull University (URL).
