IQS recently hosted a new conference on Innovation and Science in the cosmetics sector organized jointly between IQS and the Beauty Cluster. Held on 26 June, the event was sponsored by Provital. Under the title “Competitive keys in the cosmetics sector,” the event brought together nearly a hundred professionals and researchers from the cosmetics industry and addressed the incorporation of new technologies, innovation processes, and knowledge transfer, all key elements in redefining the sector.
Dr Salvador Borrós, Director of IQS, opened the event by thanking the large audience in attendance and the participating speakers, highlighting IQS’s commitment to the innovative cosmetics sector, both within the IQS Business Foundation, which counts important companies in the sector among its members, and the Technology Transfer and educational offering at the school, with specialized postgraduate courses and the new Master’s Degree in Cosmetics and Fragrances which is being launched in the upcoming academic year.
Dr Núria Vallmitjana, Director of IQS Tech Transfer, and Dr Patricia Gisbert, Innovation Manager with the Beauty Cluster, began the third Innovation and Science conference by giving the stage to Enric Bayó, Manager of Innovation and Business Models with ACCIÓ. He highlighted the great challenges posed by “living in this digital era, characterized by the great speed of change,” as well as the factors and tools that facilitate or hinder change. “People are the fundamental element of transformation, and it is only possible thanks to them.”
Dr David Manzano, Research and Innovation Manager at Provital, presented examples of the research and innovation they carry out in manufacturing cosmetics ingredients from plant extracts “inspired by nature and uniting it with science to overcome the challenges we face.”
On behalf of company Dentaid, Dr Vanessa Blanc, Head of Microbiology at the Dentaid Research Center, spoke of the great importance of research and innovation in the field of oral health. “The mouth is a great unknown, with a microbiota that has a significant impact on the development of other pathologies through the blood supply,” said Dr Blanc. She also presented some of her advanced lines of research such as the development of an artificial mouth to hold trials and achieve more effective treatments in prevention and oral care.
The research centers came next, with a presentation by Dr Sandrine Dubrac, associate professor in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Allergology at the Medical University of Innsbruck, who presented the European network NETSKINMODELS, for skin engineering and modeling, where they develop, share, and produce skin cell models very similar to human skin and in silico models to study all skin types.
The final presentation was given by Dr Núria Oliva, a professor and researcher with the Materials Engineering Group (GEMAT) at IQS, who spoke about her research on tissue therapies to obtain new skin models and their application in the field of cosmetics, making it possible to recreate scenarios both for disease treatments and to study problems related to skin ageing. Dr Oliva works in this area of expertise within the NETSKINMODELS network, of which she forms part.
The event ended with a roundtable session moderated by Dr Vallmitjana, with an interesting debate on how to implement the technological advances and innovation that companies need, as well as the support services offered by higher education where the option of industrial doctorates emerged as an excellent example of collaboration in the field of innovation. The final colloquium also offered answers to the numerous questions posed by the attendees through a platform set up for the event.
