Metal Analysis Laboratory

People in charge

Laboratory specialised in the analysis of metallic impurities in pharmaceutical products and other matrices, using atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic emission spectrophotometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry techniques. It has consolidated experience in carrying out analytical studies for pharmaceutical companies sector in a GMP environment.

Equipment and technologies

Inorganic elemental analysis techniques for trace metal conten determination.

Analytical techniques:

  • Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS).
  • Atomic emission spectrophotometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, in both cases (ICP-OES, ICP-MS).
  • Study of the elemental concentration and distribution of metallic nanoparticles in cells, using the SC-ICP-MS technique.

Types of services:

  • Trace metals determination in environmental, pharmaceutical, food and chemical sector samples in general.
  • Commissioning, optimisation and validation of analytical methods with ISO 9001 and GMP quality systems.
  • Analysis of samples and analytical research studies.
  • Characterisation of metallic nanoparticles by the SP-ICP-MS technique.

ICP-MS Multi-Quadrupole NexION 5000 (Perkin Elmer): IQS acquires in 2021 a new ICP-MS NexION 5000 Multi Quadrupole from PerkinElmer. This is the most advanced equipment in this analytical technique currently on the market, which incorporates a fourth quadrupole that significantly improves the sensitivity of the technique, while eliminating many of the spectral interferences and unwanted ions that that make it difficult to obtain fullfilling results.

Equipment and technologies
  • INexION 5000 Multi-Quadrupole ICP Mass Spectrometer (Perkin Elmer)
  • Mass Spectrometer with Inductively Coupled Plasma Source ICP-MS NexION 300XX (Perkin Elmer)
  • Atomic emission spectrophotometer - ICP (Perkin Elmer)
  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometry - graphite furnace, AAS-GF (Perkin Elmer)
  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometry - flame, AAS-FLAME (Perkin Elmer)
  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometry - hydride generation/cold steam, AAS-FIAS (Perkin Elmer)
  • Microwave digestion systems for sample preparation
