20 June 2023

“Peace and Justice. Towards more just, peaceful, and inclusive societies: young people and SDG 16” is the title of the third edition on the 2030 Agenda Seminar that the URL celebrates annually, this year held at IQS.

"Peace and Justice. Towards more just, peaceful, and inclusive societies: young people and SDG 16” is the title of the third edition on the 2030 Agenda Seminar that the URL celebrates annually, this year held at IQS.

The objective of the event was to enhance discussion about this SDG, concerning peace, from the perspective of people and groups affected by violence in wars. The seminar sought to give URL students a central role and a space for reflection in terms of implementing the 2030 Agenda.

The first presentation was given by Jeison Castaño, known as Jeihhco, an activist for peace, coexistence, and non-violence in and around Medellín, Colombia. Through hip hop, he promotes remembrance, dignity, and work for young people to offer them alternatives to life that do not involve armed violence.

The roundtable was moderated by Oriol Pou, coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in Chemical Engineering at IQS, and featured participation from URL alumni who work in the field of promoting peace and non-violence: Daniel Farràs (SED Catalunya), Mar Ortega (Catalan Committee for Refugees Catalonia – UNHCR), Juan Albacete, postdoctoral researcher at the IQS School of Management, and Elisabet Cantenys (ACOS Alliance).

The seminar ended with a space for reflection led by Ryma Sheermohammadi, an Iranian-Spanish translator and cultural outreach expert. She has worked as an interpreter at the UN, EU, and in presidential offices in more than 15 countries. She has combined social activism with outreach on issues related to Iran and the human rights situation there, especially concerning women.
