Dr Llorenç Puig, SJ, member of the IQS Department of Ethics and Christian Thought, recently participated in the "Laudate Deum" exhortation by Pope Francis. This exhortation gives continuity to, complements, and reinforces the encyclical Laudato Si, in which Pope Francis outlined a vision of environmental issues in which the climate crisis is intimately related to the dignity of human life.
IQS's Dr Puig participated along with two other Jesuits involved in studying ecological issues and promoting care for our common home, one of the areas highlighted among the universal apostolic preferences of the Society of Jesus: José Ignacio García, director of Christianity and Justice and coordinator of the Care for our Common Home with the Society of Jesus in Spain, and Jaime Tatay, professor at the Pontifical University of Comillas.
Llorenç Puig defines Laudate Deum as "an exercise of insistence in the face of indifference." He highlights the Pope's willingness to more strongly reaffirm what he already brought up in Laudato Si to face resistance that still exists in this regard. For that reason, Dr Puig states that "in the face of the resistance and confusion with which the diagnosis of Laudato Si was sometimes received, the Pope is providing more information on the environmental impacts of human action and more elements for reflection."
Dr Puig went on, saying "the reflection it offers us on the power that technology gives us, and the need to reinforce ethical considerations in the face of the possibilities it offers us, is novel.”
