IQS has presented the results of its first mobility survey linked to the “Get Moving for Change” campaign, an initiative that combines environmental awareness and real data collection through the IQS mobile application. The campaign, designed to promote more sustainable travel habits among the entire university community, has made it possible for the first time to obtain a picture of how students, professors, and administration and services staff get to and from campus on a daily basis.

The survey has compiled 159 complete responses from students (6.13% of the total) and 42 from staff and faculty (19.44%). Despite the limited participation, the survey shed light on the question: “How do we get to IQS?” Among the most relevant data, it is worth highlighting that 80% of the students who responded use sustainable means of transport, such as the metro, bicycle, walking, or electric vehicles, while for faculty and staff the percentage drops to 50%.

As to annual distances travelled, students accumulated a total of 4,947 km, while staff totalled 4,107 km per person. The distances and means of transport used translate into average emissions of 233 kg of CO₂ per student per year, and 387 kg per person by faculty and staff.

It should be noted that monitoring and data collection is necessary to comply with the URL’s climate commitment, in particular with the goal of “reducing indirect emissions associated with mobility 33% by 2030 compared to 2019 emissions.”

To guarantee the reliability of the results, IQS made use of its academic expertise in statistics and employed robust calculation techniques for each means of transport, preventing occasional long journeys from distorting the general averages. This has made it possible to obtain environmental indicators representative of typical behaviours within the IQS community.

One of the concrete results of the campaign has been the creation of the Rodem group, a ride sharing network for members of the IQS community that seeks to reduce emissions and optimize travel.

“Get moving for change” forms part of IQS’s strategy to integrate sustainability into day-to-day life on the campus as sustainable mobility is one of the priority lines of action within the school’s commitment to a culture of environmental change shared by the entire university community.
