Legal procedures

Legal procedures and assistance

These are the first steps for coming to IQS

If you want to come and study at IQS, you will need to complete a series of procedures before arriving. Don’t worry, there aren’t too many of them! You can find all the information you need below. Once you have pre-registered for one of our programmes, you will receive support and help if you need advice on any of these procedures.

Make sure you don’t forget anything

Students from the European Union (EU) or the EFTA

If you are a citizen of an EU or EFTA country (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein), you do not need a visa to enter Spain. You will only need to submit your passport or identity document from your country of origin.

If your stay in Spain exceeds three months, you must register with the Central Registry of Foreigners to obtain your EU Citizen Registration Certificate.

Upon arrival, you must also complete the municipal registry of inhabitants procedure which certifies your residence in a Spanish municipality. This procedure is mandatory for all individuals residing in Spain for three months or longer. For more information, please see the Legal Procedures section on the IQS Virtual Campus.

When you arrive at IQS, visit the Student Services Office, where we will provide you with information and guidance on the necessary procedures.

Students from outside the European Union (EU)

If you are a student from a non-EU country, you must apply for a student visa at the Spanish embassy or consulate in your country of origin. This also applies to the United Kingdom. There they will inform you about the required documents, which may vary depending on the consulate. In addition, consular staff may request additional information in certain cases.

When you receive your visa, verify that it includes the period of validity (date of issue and expiration) and your Foreign National Identification Number (NIE).

Upon arrival, you must first complete the municipal registry of inhabitants procedure which certifies your residence in a Spanish municipality. This procedure is mandatory for all individuals residing in Spain for three months or longer. You can then apply for a Foreign National Identity Card (TIE).

When you arrive at IQS, you can visit the Student Services Office where we will provide you with information and guidance on the necessary procedures.

Official access to bachelor’s degree studies

For students from EU Member States or with international agreements in place

You can access the Spanish university system through the accreditation for access to the Spanish university system (UNEDassis) issued by the National Distance Education University (UNED).

For students from outside the EU

You must apply for the approval and recognition of your pre-university studies with the Spanish secondary school baccalaureate degree.

How do you apply for it?

  • In your country of origin: to process the approval and recognition of foreign studies in your country of origin, you must consult the Spanish Embassy website in your country.
  • Through the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Official access to a master’s degree

If you studied outside the European Union, your degree must be apostilled and legalized for the enrolment step. If you completed undergraduate studies outside the European Union that grant you access to graduate-level studies, you must provide a certificate issued by your home university confirming that the degree you earned enables you to access master’s degree studies in the country where your undergraduate degree was earned.

If you have studied in an EU member country, you can access a master’s degree at IQS with your official bachelor’s degree.

All students arriving in Spain are required to arrange for and take out adequate insurance for the duration of their stay in Spain. The minimum requirements that this insurance must have are:

  • Coverage without wait periods or co-payments, including health care expenses (medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, hospitalization, and ambulance) in the event of illness or accident. A minimum coverage of €30,000 is recommended.
  • Repatriation or medical transport in the event of injury or illness.
  • Repatriation or transportation in the event of death.
  • Personal liability insurance, with a recommended minimum coverage of €30,000.

Conditions may vary depending on your country of origin. Therefore, IQS recommends that you check with the Spanish Consulate and your insurance company before traveling to Spain.

Upon your arrival at IQS, you will be required to present proof of insurance covering the entire duration of your studies.

We respect students’ right to choose their own insurance. However, IQS recommends the  ONCAMPUS ESTUDIA policy, which complies with the following legal requirements:

  • EU citizens: Accepted for obtaining the NIE (EU Registration Certificate).
  • Non-EU citizens: Valid for visa application and renewal of the TIE.

Students from the European Union (EU), EFTA, and United Kingdom

Before traveling to Spain, check with your insurance company regarding the details and procedures to follow in case you need medical attention during your stay.

In addition to mandatory insurance, if you are covered by the National Healthcare System of your country you can apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your country of origin. The EHIC gives you access to the Spanish National Healthcare System and covers emergency services through CatSalut. However, the conditions may vary depending on the agreements in place between countries. Therefore, we recommend finding out about the exact coverage before arriving in Spain.

Students from outside the European Union (EU)

Before traveling to Spain, check with your insurance company regarding the details and procedures to follow in case you need medical attention during your stay.

If your stay in Spain is longer than one year, keep in mind that the requirements for renewing your TIE may be stricter than those required for the visa application.

Key requirements for the renewal of your TIE:

  • Minimum coverage of €100,000 for healthcare.
  • If your insurance is from another country, you must legalize the policy at your country’s consulate in Spain or at the Spanish Consulate in your country of origin.
  • All documentation submitted for renewal must be in Spanish. If it is in another language, you will need an official sworn translation.
