The goal of the PhD thesis project is to pioneer the development of novel sustainable cement varieties through the implementation of cutting-edge technologies.
This involves the utilization and optimization of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) of different sources including those obtained by CO2 fixation processes such as carbonated recycled concrete fines. The project will delve deeply into exploring the advantages of different technologies across different manufacturing stages. Specifically, it aims to activate materials and chemically fix CO2, thus facilitating its sequestration in both the fresh paste and the cured pieces.
For this purpose, a sustainable cement will be designed after testing several cement mixtures, SCMs, limestone, and probably other minor admixtures. SCMs will come from industrial byproducts such as carbonated recycled concrete fines (CRCF), blast furnace slag, bottom ash, or natural products like calcined clays. The aim is to develop sustainable cements with optimized contents of clinker, SCMs and limestone. This Industrial Doctorate is a collaboration between Ciments Molins and IQS.
