Biopesticides are a promising alternative to chemical pesticides, with lower healthand environmental risk profiles.Abundant bioactives present in seaweeds, tree bark and spent coffee grounds have specific toxicity against nematode and insect pests such as Potato Cyst Nematode (PCN), Root Knot Nematode(RKN) and Banana Weevils (BW).
CROP-SAFE will bring together four different feedstock sources (aquatic biomass, forestryresidues, spent coffee grounds and fungal biomass), four EU biorefineries and leading EU academics as the basis for delivery of an extensive library of bioactives as nematicides and insecticides.
CROP-SAFE’s mission is to develop a holistic package of tools (active materials, delivery materials, formulated Plant protection products ( and digital decisión support models) for effective and sustainable management of PCN, RKN, and BW in European potato, tomato, and banana crops. This is a European project HORIZON-JU-CBE-2024 from the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking. The total Project Cost is €5,236,542 and the EU Contribution is €4,893,904.
